Thomas Stearns Eliot was born American but at age 37 became a British citizen. He began to love literature at a young age due to health problems that prevented him from most physical activity. His first poem was published in 1905.
Eliot attended Harvard where he studied philosophy, getting his bachelor's degree in three years instead of two. In 1925 he joined the publishing company Faber and Faber where he later became director for the rest of his career.
His most notable achievements include the Order of Merit in 1948 and the Nobel Prize for Literature "for his outstanding, pioneer contribution to present-day poetry" that same year.
