Easy DIY Paper Cone Sarimanok Craft for Kids
Welcome to our DIY Paper Cone Sarimanok Craft for Kids! This is an enjoyable and straightforward craft project that not only offers fun but is also an educational opportunity to teach children about the rich culture of the Maranao people of the Philippines.
The Sarimanok, a legendary bird in Philippine mythology, is known for its vibrant colors and is a symbol of good fortune. Now, let's create our own good luck charm using simple craft materials!
Materials:
- Construction paper in various bright colors
- A round plate for tracing (about 9 inches in diameter is a good size)
- A pair of scissors
- A pencil for tracing
- Craft glue or tape
- Googly eyes (optional)
Instructions:
- Place your plate onto a piece of construction paper. Trace around the edge of the plate with your pencil. Then, cut out the circle you have just traced.
- Fold the paper circle in 4 equal parts. Unfold it, and you will have 4 lines intersecting at the center. Cut along one of the lines until you reach the center of the circle.
- Overlap the two edges you just cut to form a cone shape. Secure it with tape or glue. This forms the body of your Sarimanok bird.
- Cut out a small triangle from a different color of construction paper to make the beak. Cut out two larger ovals for the eyes. You can use googly eyes instead if you prefer. Use craft glue to stick the beak and eyes onto the front of your cone.
- Cut out long, feather-like shapes from various colors of construction paper. Create a generous amount as these will be used for the crest and tail feathers and even for feathers on the body.
- Glue the "feathers" on the top of the head as a crest. Also, attach the feathers at the back of the body to represent the tail feathers. Ensure the tail feathers are sticking out past the bottom of the cone for a dramatic effect.
