DLTK's Blog
A Brief Respite
March 2020

by Leanne Guenther

Hi everyone,

I’ve received a few questions from viewers asking why I don’t have more focus on current events on the website now. So I thought I’d sit down and tell you where my head’s at.

Our sites have been around since I was off on maternity leave with Kaitlyn. She just turned 22 in December. Back then, inkjet printers had just replaced dot matrix printers and I was like, huh… wouldn’t it be handy to be able to print off a quick colouring page. Things change. Some days faster than others.

Kaitlyn painting plates and making a collage.

My amazing team of minions include family and a couple of dear, decades long friends and … me.

Through the years, we’ve tried to provide useful, free “stuff” to parents, grandparents, teachers, childcare staff, Sunday Schools, home schoolers and most of all kids.

Despite everything going on… nothing’s really changed for the website.

Nurse Paper Craft

We’ve been celebrating International Nurse’s Day for a decade or more. It’s on May 12th… mark your calendar! https://www.dltk-kids.com/crafts/miscellaneous/florence-nightingale.htm

I’ve admired our many community helpers and tried to share that admiration with my own children and the internet community. https://www.dltk-kids.com/crafts/miscellaneous/communities.htm

Grandma Doris, Aunty Joy and Aunt Dianna are all retired nurses. Lots of our family are farmers.

My mom was an elementary school teacher. She inspired the KidZone content. She didn’t really love all the internet stuff though! Lol https://www.kidzone.ws/

Grandpa Bob worked in the grocery business for 40 years. Everyone in the neighbourhood knew him. Pic’n’pac, the store he managed, is where my mom and dad met. They’re still very much in love.

My sister in law Sharla is an elder care provider with a very strong faith. She’s pretty much single handedly responsible for the Bible stories though I may have drawn some of the images. https://www.dltk-bible.com/cv/index.htm

Darren’s an accountant and I just run a little website on the side. Nothing particularly special about either of us and we sort of like it that way. We love each other. We love our kids. We’re pretty simple people.

Yes, there’s a lot going on.

But there are still places, like mine, that are trying to provide a space that just seems… ordinary.

Not because we don’t care, but because we do.

I need a break, just a brief respite from everything that needs to be done. A little corner where absolutely nothing has changed. I thought maybe the website could be just that for some of you that have been viewers for years. And for those of you who are just discovering us, welcome… don’t expect an App. I haven’t the slightest clue how to make one. Lol

Spring Angel Paper Craft

The sun is warm as I write this and sip a cup of “Serenity Now” tea. I’m holding out hope that the snow will finally start to melt this week.

Darren made bacon and eggs for breakfast because I was feeling too overwhelmed in that moment to “decide breakfast”. He burned the bacon, but all I could taste was the love.

I chatted with my daughters over text before I sat down to write this. After, I’m going to call mom and dad to see how their tomato seedlings are doing. I’m hoping they have a few extras for my garden this year. I have some plans to expand my veggie garden section this summer.

Grass Seed Cup

I find growing things very soothing. Maybe your kids will too!
https://www.dltk-holidays.com/spring/m-grass-seed-cup.htm

You can do it in a plastic cup with grass seed (cats love this!) or chives or alfalfa sprouts. (Include the image from the craft)

I’m not ignoring the situation.

I need to take this seriously. I need to make good personal choices. I need to acknowledge my and others very real fears and anxieties with compassion and patience.

Then I need to stare with wonder at all that I have instead of all that I’ve lost.

Love you all,
Leanne

Wife, mom and the woman behind the scenes of the DLTK's Crafts for Kids websites.  The websites are a terrific hobby -- run by (me) Leanne, a mom with two girls as my official craft testers and my husband as my technical support.  DLTK are the first initials of each of the people in my family (I'm the L!).  Whenever we send out little cards or whatnot, we sign 'love DLTK' ... when I started the website I used the initials.  Had I known the website would get actual strangers visiting it, I would have picked a less mysterious name but we're all stuck with it now!
