Intro to the Internet Articles
The oddest thing happened when I became a "webmaster"... somehow, I also became the center of conversation at dinner parties -- for a few minutes anyways.
I'm just a regular, ordinary mom. I don't have a computer background or anything... But even computer people loved to chat with me about the ins and outs of owning a website. It was (and still is) a truly bizarre phenomenon!
There are two things people ask the most...
1) How do you make a website?
They ask with interest and vague dreams of becoming a billionaire like Mark Zuckerberg -- er, yeah... That's likely not going to happen.
2) What secret things can you tell about the people who visit your
site?
They ask with awe and poorly masked fear. Can a website "spy" on me?
Since people who speak to me up close and personal seem so interested, I thought maybe you would be to. So, I'm going to put together a few articles to answer the questions I'm most commonly asked.
The short answers are that
- it's easy to make a website but you won't get rich doing it
and
- There are things I can tell about people who visit (for some good reasons), but it isn't simple to tell specific things about specific people. The best way to figure something out about someone (even on the internet) is if they tell you. Having said that, you'd be surprised what we (webmasters) can tell even if you don't tell us.
