Iditarod Activities for Kids

The Iditarod is a long distance sled dog race that is held every year in March.  Many Alaskans consider it the most popular sporting event in Alaska.  Each year there are about 50 mushers (the person driving the sled) and a total of about 1000 dogs.  The first race was held in 1973.  Most of the competitors are Alaskan but over the years there have been sleds driven by mushers from 14 different countries.

The race is named after the Iditarod Trail which is one of four National Historic Trails in Alaska.  The teams race across the Alaskan tundra from one remote settlement to another.  In total the dogs run pull the sled approximately 1000 miles from Anchorage, Alaska to Nome, Alaska.
