Baseball Player - Jackie Robinson
Baseball Crafts and Activities
Jack Roosevelt Robinson was the first African American person to play major league baseball in the United States.
He started playing first base with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.
Jackie Robinson wore number 42 throughout his career and in 1997 all of the major league teams retired that number to honour him -- he's the first person to ever have his number retired in honour across all major league teams!
Jackie Robinson was an amazing baseball player but an even more amazing human being!
Martin Luther King, Jr. said that Jackie was "a legend and a symbol in his own time", and that he "challenged the dark skies of intolerance and frustration."
And according to historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, Jackie's "efforts were a monumental step in the civil-rights revolution in America ... [His] accomplishments allowed black and white Americans to be more respectful and open to one another and more appreciative of everyone's abilities."
He was born in Cairo, Georgia on January 31, 1919.
