The Forest Bride

by Leanne Guenther, based on the Finnish folktale

beautiful mouseLemminkäinen was a kind and adventurous man who loved nothing more than exploring the deep, lush forests of his homeland. It was during one of these explorations that he came across a group of mice who were in the midst of a joyous celebration. As he watched the tiny creatures dance and sing, his eyes fell upon a particularly beautiful mouse. Her fur was as soft as silk, and her eyes sparkled like diamonds in the sun.

Feeling bold, Lemminkäinen approached the mouse and introduced himself. The mouse was shy at first, but she soon warmed up to the kind man and they became fast friends. They laughed and talked for hours, sharing secrets and stories of their adventures.

As time passed, Lemminkäinen realized that he was in love with the mouse. He could not imagine a life without her, and so he asked her to marry him. The mouse was hesitant at first, but she saw how kind and gentle Lemminkäinen was and decided to accept his proposal.

Together, the couple started their married life, but as time went on, the bride began to feel unhappy in the human world. She missed her old life in the forest, where she could run and play with her mouse friends. She felt out of place among the humans and longed to be back in her own world.

Lemminkäinen searching for the forest bride. One day, the bride disappeared without a trace. Lemminkäinen was devastated and searched everywhere for her. He looked high and low, but she was nowhere to be found. Finally, he decided to return to the forest where he had first met her.

As he wandered through the dense undergrowth, he heard a soft rustling sound. Following the sound, he came upon a clearing, and there he saw the bride, once again transformed into a mouse.

Lemminkäinen was confused and hurt. "Why did you leave me?" he asked, his voice cracking with emotion.

Lemminkäinen was saddened by the news but understood that it was important for her to be true to herself and live a life that made her happy, even if it meant they had to part ways.

In the end, the Forest Bride and Lemminkäinen said their goodbyes. Though it was hard, Lemminkäinen knew that he had to let her go and allow her to follow her heart. He watched as she scampered away, feeling both happy for her newfound freedom and heartbroken at the same time.

By doing so, we can help them to find their own happiness and live their lives to the fullest.

From that day on, Lemminkäinen continued to explore the forest, but he did so with a newfound sense of respect and reverence for the creatures that called it home. And whenever he came across a group of mice, he always took a moment to stop and appreciate their beauty and their freedom, knowing that it was a gift to be cherished and honored.
