AS THE GIRLS ARRIVE:
- give them temporary name tags (I have made up white labels with each girl's name for this week)
- show them where to put their dues (we have a treasure box for this)
1) OPENING CIRCLE:
- welcome the girls and tell them our names (I'm Firefly... Did you want to be Rainbow or Sparkle?)
- teach the girls the opening song:
Let's be friends and share a song.
Let's be friends and dance along.
Hold my hand we'll skip and play.
Let's put sparkle in our day.
- teach the girls the Sparks promise ("I promise to share and be a friend")
2) NAME GAME:
- stand in a circle with one girl in the center (we'll use one of the second year girls)
- circle walks (skips) around the girl to the right and says "Fe Fi Fo Fum, ____ is going to have some fun."
- circle walks (skips) around the girl to the left and says "De Di Do Dum, she's cast a spell on everyone!"
- girl in the center spins around pointing at everyone and says "I've turned you into a ____" (cat, snake, rabbit, etc)
- everyone makes the sounds/acts like the animal for awhile and then the leader asks them to return to the circle
- The next girl gets to go in the center.
3) CRYSTAL AND THE SPARKS STORY:
- read it however you like... I'm afraid I don't have any props for it or anything, but there are pictures you can show the girls as you read it.
- if you don't have the Sparks book that has the story, you can find the words to it here.
4) NAME TAGS:
- rainbow name tags
- I have pencil crayons and will have the names pre-written.
- I'll take them home and laminate them and add pins for next week
5) DUES DAISY:
- simple craft that takes a bit of gluing and a bit of simple cutting (we have scissors and glue for all the girls).
- Here's a quick description of the project:
- Materials: pink fun foam, yellow fun foam, hot glue, green felt, small pom poms, wiggly eyes, velcro, string, safety pins, pens, scissors, glue
- Prior to the meeting, for each girl, I cut out a flower shape from
pink fun foam
- I cut out a circle quite a bit bigger than a loonie from yellow fun
foam.
- I hot glued the bottom half of the circle onto the flower as shown in
the diagram below. I hot glued a small piece of velcro to the top
of the circle and the flower to close the dues daisy (this forms a
little pouch for a loonie to brought in each week).
- Lastly, I punched a hole in the top petal of the flower, tied a string
through it and attached a small safety pin.
- At the meeting, the girls cut leaf shapes from green felt and glued them on
- They glued on wiggly eyes and a pom pom nose to the circle middle
- They drew on a mouth with pen.
- Where they could, they printed their names on the back of their daisy. Leaders helped the girls who couldn't.
- I took all of the flowers home to hot glue any bits that the girls didn't attach well enough and to allow the projects to dry.
- Starting next week, they can pin the dues daisy to their scrapbook bag
and put a loonie in it for each week's dues.
6) CLOSING CIRCLE:
- Closing song (tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)
Twinkle twinkle little spark,
Time to go, it's getting dark.
To your pillow, to your bed,
Time to rest your sleepy head.
Twinkle twinkle little spark,
Time to go, it's getting dark.
- Hand out any notices for the next week (we have health forms that everyone has to fill out)
