T-Shirt Yarn

Do you have an old t-shirt with a hole in the sleeve, a stain on the front, or you just never wear anymore? This is a perfect project for repurposing an old t-shirt into yarn, which you can use for heaps of other projects as well like basic knitting or things like coasters.

Materials:

• old t-shirt (the t-shirt will work better if it doesn't have seams on the side, because then there won't be any lumps in your yarn),
• scissors

Instructions:

• Lay your old t-shirt flat and use a pair of scissors to carefully cut out the middle part. Cut off the top part (with the sleeves and neck line) and the bottom hem.
• Fold the rectangle piece so that the seam or closed sides of the rectangles are being folded to meet each other. But don't fold all the way from one side to the other, instead there should be about 1" left at the top that is not doubled up.
• Cut strips up the rectangle but don't cut all the way up into the 1" at the top.
  • Depending on how thick you want your yarn to be, you can cut them between 1/2" to 1 1/2" thick.
  • Keep in mind, the strips should be about the same width the whole way across.
• Now there will be this connected bit with the strips all the way down. In order to make the t-shirt yarn continuous, you need to cut across this section DIAGONALLY.
  • On the edge, the first strip will be cut to the edge.
  • Then cut diagonally from one strip to the other, the whole way down.
• Then roll your very long strip of t-shirt into a ball. As you roll stretch the thread through your fingers which will make the strip become circular (like yarn).
