Egg Carton Cricket Craft

Sometimes I look in my craft drawers and realize I have so many miscellaneous craft supplies like pipe cleaners and googley eyes. I love making little creatures (like insects and bugs) because you can get creative with the supplies you use!

This little cricket is absolutely adorable and children can let their creativity shine by choosing their favourite colours and supplies to create their cute, insect friend.

Materials:

• egg carton (you need three of the egg cups, still connected),
• paint (I used green but feel free to let your creativity shine),
• paintbrush,
• construction paper (I used green),
• pipe cleaners,
• googley eyes,
• pen or something for a mouth (I used colourful macaroni,
• glue (hot glue is sturdier and faster but you can also use white glue, especially if you are working with younger kids),

Instructions:

• Cut out three egg cups but make sure they remain connected to each other. You can trim the bottoms off a little bit so they rest nicely on the floor.
• Paint the egg carton cups (you can use green if you want to make your cricket as realistic as possible or you can pick your favourite colours and let your creativity shine).
• Now for the wings!
  • Cut two leaf/raindrop shapes out of construction paper.
  • Fold the tips down and use glue to attach it to the front of the second egg cup.
• Use pipe cleaner to create antennas, and legs:
  • For the antennas, fold about 4" of pipe cleaner in half and curl the two sides.
  • For the front legs, fold about 4"-6" of pipe cleaner in half and fold little feet on both legs. You will need to make two of these sets of front legs.
  • For the back legs, cut a pipe cleaner in half and fold it so that they look like the jumping legs of a cricket.
• Glue the different sets of pipe cleaner to the egg cups.
• Use some different supplies to give your cricket a face. I used googley eyes and a colourful macaroni. You can also try using pompoms and markers.
