DLTK's Crafts for Kids
Magic Stars
Make your own night sky full of twinkling stars! This easy “magic” painting craft is perfect for little ones, all you need is a crayon, some paint, and a bit of imagination. As you brush on the color, your hidden stars will appear like magic in the sky!
This is a fun craft for very young children to make -- anyone who can wield a paintbrush can make this craft.
Materials:
- white paper (cardstock, construction paper or heavy bond computer paper work best)
- white wax crayon (crayola, etc)
- tempera paint
- paint brush
Instructions:
- Draw stars on the white paper with white crayon.
- I know drawing white stars on white paper sounds odd but it will make sense as we go!
- For very young children, an adult or babysitter can do this prior to craft time -- it will make the project seem very magical to the kids. Painting over the paper will reveal the hidden image!
- mix tempera paint with water to make a wash (about 1/2 tempera to 1/2
water -- Add a wee bit more water if the paint is still quite thick).
- You want a very watery mixture.
- If you're doing this for the first time, it's good to test your wash on a scrap piece of paper with a scribble of white wax crayon on it to make sure you have the consistency of the paint right
Paint over the white paper with your tempera paint wash and watch the stars magically appear in the night sky!
