Brunhilda and the White Horse

by Leanne Guenther, based on the German folktale

Queen Brunhilda

Once upon a time, in a far-off land filled with enchantment and wonder, there resided a beautiful and radiant queen named Brunhilda. She was cherished throughout the kingdom for her compassionate heart, as well as her dauntless spirit and unwavering bravery in battle. Brunhilda's fame reached far and wide, and her subjects adored her.

One fateful day, destiny presented Brunhilda with an extraordinary gift – a majestic and pure white horse named Silver. Silver was truly a one-of-a-kind creature, unparalleled by any other horse in the realm. His long, flowing mane and tail billowed like silken banners, and his pristine coat glistened with the brilliance of freshly fallen snow. Silver was also an enchanted being, possessing the mystical ability to grant wishes to those he deemed worthy.

Brunhilda treasured Silver more than anything else in the world. Together, they would traverse the vast forests and sprawling fields, with the wind playfully caressing Brunhilda's hair as Silver galloped faster than any other horse could ever dream. Brunhilda was wise and knew she must keep Silver's magical powers a secret, lest he lose his enchantment and become an ordinary horse.

One day, a mischievous and daring young prince, intrigued by whispers of Silver, hatched a plan to steal the extraordinary horse. Under the cover of darkness, the prince stealthily crept into Queen Brunhilda's stables and took Silver, completely unaware of the enchantment that lay within the magnificent steed. As soon as the prince mounted Silver's back, he felt an electrifying, magical energy surge through his very being. Entranced, he urged Silver to run faster and faster, and together they galloped through the picturesque countryside at an astonishing speed.

When Brunhilda awoke to find Silver missing, her heart ached with worry. She promptly dispatched her loyal soldiers to scour the land for her cherished companion. Before long, they discovered the audacious prince riding Silver, his eyes filled with wonder and excitement. The prince was brought before the queen, who was both angry at his thievery and impressed by his courage and skill in riding Silver.

Seeing potential in the young prince, Brunhilda decided to grant him an opportunity to redeem himself. She devised three seemingly impossible tasks for him to perform, secretly hoping that he would fail. The first task was to catch a swift and cunning rabbit with his bare hands. The second task was to scale the heights of a towering tree and retrieve a delicate bird's nest nestled among its highest branches. The third and final task was to traverse a wide and treacherous river without a single drop of water dampening his clothes.

Fueled by determination and an unyielding spirit, the prince resolved to complete these tasks, confident in his ability to succeed with Silver's help. Silver bore the prince through the lush forest, where he caught the elusive rabbit and bravely climbed the colossal tree. Finally, Silver used his enchantment to aid the prince in crossing the river on his back, keeping him miraculously dry.

When the prince returned to Brunhilda, triumphant with the completed tasks, she was nothing short of amazed. She realized the prince was not only brave and clever but had also captured her heart. Overcome with admiration, she decided to present him with Silver as a reward for his extraordinary valor.
