France, a country in Europe, has some of the most famous landmarks on Earth (think, the Eiffel Tower, the Palace of Versailles, and Mont St Michel)! It is an interesting country for children to study for this reason.

France, as the name suggests, is a country with French as its official language. While it is a primarily French-speaking country, regional languages like Basque; Breton, a Celtic language; Corsican, an Italo-Dalmatian language; and the Germanic dialect, Alsatian, are spoken here.

France is a country found in the Northern Hemisphere and the Eastern Hemisphere of the globe. As of 2021, the country is split into 18 political divisions. Since France is a colonial country, who invaded and violently settled across the globe, only 13 of these divisions are considered metropolitan regions (i.e., on the European continent) while the remaining 5 are located as overseas regions. The 13 regions of metropolitan France are Auvergne - Rhône-Alpes, Bretagne (Brittany), Bourgogne - Franche-Comté, Corse (Corsica), Centre - Val de Loire, Grand Est (Alsace, Champagne, Lorraine), Hauts de France ( Nord Pas-de-Calais - Picardie), Ile de France (Paris), Nouvelle Aquitaine (Aquitaine, Poitou-Charentes, Limousin), Normandie, Occitanie (Midi-Pyrénées, Languedoc), Pays de la Loire, and Provence - Cote d'Azur. The 5 overseas regions of France are Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, the Wallis and Futuna Islands, and French Polynesia.

France is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Alps and the Pyrenees mountains, and is considered a “geographic bridge” between northern and southern Europe. France is bordered by the English Channel to the north, the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Biscay to the west, Spain and Andorra to the southwest, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, Switzerland and Italy to the southeast, and Germany, Luxembourg, and Belgium to the northeast.

  • The Eiffel Tower is 1,063 ft tall!
  • It is repainted every 7 years.
  • Over 20,000 lightbulbs light up every night!

Musée du Louvre (Louvre Museum)

  • There are approximately 7,500 paintings in the Louvre!
  • The museum has a distinctive pyramid made of glass that sits in the famous front entrance and contains metal that is 21 m high.

Château de Versailles (Palace of Versailles)

  • The Palace of Versailles is a former French royal residence to King Louis XIV in 1682.
  • During the French Revolution, Versailles was abandoned.

  • Most notably in our more recent historical memories, both Paris Peace treaties (to end both WWI and WWII) were signed here!

Arc de Triomphe

  • The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon because he wanted a series of archways to ride his horse through!
  • Napoleon never got to see the final product because he was exiled before the completion of the Arc.
