Animals of Mexico

Mexico has a LOT of animals! It contains about 10% of all known species of animals on the planet including quite a number that don't live anywhere else.

None of the lists of animals on DLTK's are all inclusive. I have tried to include a good smattering of fun and interesting animals that children will recognize and be able to identify.

BIRDS OF MEXICO: Some of the most colorful and unique birds are found in Mexico. These include parrots, macaws, flamingos, storks, pelicans, toucans and blue-footed boobies.

INSECTS OF MEXICO: The southern end of a monarch butterflies migratory pattern is in Mexico -- each winter thousands of butterflies travel south to enjoy the warm Mexican winter. Praying Mantises are also very neat insects from Mexico.

MAMMALS OF MEXICO: Some of the more interesting mammals found in Mexico are jaguars, pumas, bobcats, grey wolves, coyotes, burros (donkeys), anteaters, bats, monkeys, humpback whales, grey whales and dolphins.

REPTILES and AMPHIBIANS OF MEXICO: Crocodiles, sea turtles, painted wood turtles, green iguanas, house geckos, horned lizards, Mexican pigmy rattlesnakes and striped basilisks are examples of some of the reptiles found in Mexico. Frogs are amphibians found all over the world -- my favorite Mexican frog is the red-eyed tree frog although all of the tree frogs are pretty cute. Tiger salamanders (cute) and oaxacan caecilian (icky) are also amphibians from Mexico. We saw one of the oaxacan caecilian when we were there ... it made mommy and the girls squeal. (it looks like a super-sized earthworm)
